With Anna Caballero Terming Out in Assembly, the Race to Replace her Heats up

Assemblymember Anna Caballero, D-Salinas, terms out at the end of this year—a holdover from the old system of term limits that cap state Assembly members at six years and three terms. (If you remember her running for an open seat in 2016, it’s not amnesia: After two terms in the Assembly, she ran and lost for a State Senate seat, and then went on to serve in Gov. Jerry Brown’s cabinet before she resigned and decided to run for her old job—even with just one term left.)

That means for the second time in two years, there’s an open seat for Assembly District 30, which includes all of South Monterey County and Big Sur, San Benito County, Watsonville, and parts of Santa Clara County including Gilroy and Hollister.

There’s a long list of candidates who are considering running and have formed committees that enable them to start fundraising. Now is the season, five months before the June 5 primary, that candidates start officially announcing their plans to run.
